Andrea Cortonesi, owner of Uccelliera purchased in 1986 an ancient homestead. The name Uccelliera, meaning aviary in Italian, probably dates back to the Middle Ages when falcons where raised in this specific area. Today the estate has an extension of 6.5 hectares of vineyards of different exposures planted with Sangiovese. Depending on the age of the vines, vineyard density is 3,000-5,000 plants per hectare so that grape yield is naturally low. The work in the vineyards, carried out entirely by hand, is focussed on obtaining perfectly balanced fruit. Andrea’s efforts continue in the cellar built underground where the wines rest at a constant and natural temperature. The Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino are complex, juicy, silky, well balanced. A small quantity of proprietary wine, Rapace Toscana, a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot is also produced.
